OBA’s 2019

Last week Muddy York Brewing earned four gold and one bronze at the 2019 Ontario Brewing Awards. Our Gaslight Helles Lager and Haberdasher Hefeweizenboth were awarded the top prizes in their respective categories, and two collaborations earned gold as well. The first, Working Twice as Hard DIPA, a collaboration with Beer. Diversity.’s Ren Navarro was named best New England IPA (it's just been re-released and is available on tap, online, and in the retail fridge). The other, Black Opal Schwarzbier, which we brewed with Lauren Richard (@beergirlca) got top honours in the Dark European Lager category. We’ll have a fresh batch of it next month. MY Bock Maibock, our annual rite of spring, won bronze and will return when all the snow has melted next year.

Yes, We Can

You’ve probably noticed over the last while, we’ve been packaging most of the beer we sell out of our retail shop in 355ml cans. While we loved the look of our elegant 500ml bottles, we decided to transition to cans for a few reasons.
The first is that aluminum cans are the best way to ensure quality and freshness. They prevent spoilage by protecting from light and oxygen, thus keeping the contents within fresh and tasting great. Aluminum is 100% recyclable and unlike glass bottles which are manufactured overseas, aluminum is produced locally. Lastly, thanks to the good folks at Northern Canning, we are able to package thousands of cans in one shot (as opposed to the sixty or so bottles we are capable of filling in the same amount of time). This means we have better inventory of your favourite Muddy York beers and are far less likely to be sold-out of them when you visit the brewery.

Modern beer cans are lined with a polymer coating to ensure that the aluminum never comes into contact with the beer. This eliminates the possibility that the beer you’re drinking will taste metallic. As you sip from a can, the proximity of your nose to the aluminum might give off a slight metallic aroma, but the beer itself will not contain any of that flavour. That’s why it’s always a good idea to pour your beer into a glass (plus you get a cool visual).

Recently, we’ve put our old classics Major Small Best BitterStork Derby Stout, and Muddy York Porter in 355mL cans for the first time. They taste and looks great and you’ll be happy to know we’ve got them in the retail fridge and online.
Change is good. So are cans.

Enjoy Labour Day With Two New Beers

For many, Labour Day marks the unofficial end of summer. But it doesn’t mean it’s the end of enjoying great beers here at Muddy York. With that in mind, we’re pleased to introduce you to our two latest brews.

The “Olli” Unfiltered Heirloom Lager - A premium lager brewed with 100% Alberta Heritage Select heirloom barley. Also known as “Olli,” this unique variety has been grown by the Kozack family in Alberta since 1932. Next up is the 8th installment in our single hop/single malt Ward Series of pale ales; Ward 8: Huell Melon Pale Ale. An intensely fruity ale, Ward 8: Huell Melon Pale Ale is bursting with flavours and aromas of fresh cantaloupe and honeydew melon.

Available in-store, on tap and online.

M’eat Resto Butcher Pop-Up

We’re pleased to welcome back M’Eat Resto Butcher to the Muddy York taproom for a pop-up on Saturday, August 17th. With an affinity for sustainably raised beef, chef Cam Nelson uses little more than salt, pepper and love to make some seriously good food.

On the menu is a Slow-Roasted Ponderosa Sandwich and Ratatouille Skewers. Chef Cam is slow roasting a beef hip on an open fire for 8hrs and serving it sliced on a bun. We reckon you don’t want to miss this shindig, partner.

Sours!? Sweet!

Sour beers produce complex layers of flavours that you just won’t find in most other styles. We believe this is why sours have grown so popular with those who don’t typically love beer. You may wonder what gives sour beers their distinctive taste. The answer, is Lactobacillus, a bacteria that turns sugars into lactic acid. It’s the same bacteria that gives yogurt its slightly sour taste. Try one today, or introduce this style to the uninitiated. They may go wild for the funky, fruity, and tart taste of sours!

Luckily, if you’re sweet on sours, we’ve just canned our Staring Down The Sun Clementine Sour, Ricky's Refresher Strawberry-Lime Berliner Weisse, and Fox Hunter Dry-Hopped Sour. Get some in-store, on-tap, and online.

Work Hard, Play Hard

You really need more coffee during your next meeting. By “coffee” we mean Working Hard NEIPA with Azacca and Huell Melon, and by “meeting” we mean relaxing on the patio, campsite or waterfront. This version of Working Hard was brewed with Azacca and Huell Melon hops, giving this hazy New England style IPA notes of fresh cantaloupe, mango and orange. So, if you are working hard during this last month of summer (or hardly working) we have our newest iteration from the Working Hard series for you on-tap, instore and online.

Friday Night Pop-Up with Dang Good BBQ

We're switching it up this week with a food pop-up on Friday! On July 26th between 4 and 8pm Dang Good BBQ is pulling up to the MYBC beer garden for an evening of smoky goodness. This is BBQ and smoked meat that dreams are made of.
