Plank Road Baltic Porter is Back

This Saturday we are releasing two versions of our Plank Road Baltic Porter! Both are 8.8% ABV and 32 IBUs of smooth, roasted, malty goodness.

The first is our original. Silky and full-bodied, this beer displays plenty of rich malt character with notes of cocoa and sweet coffee. Available in 500ml Bottles.

The second is Port Barrel-Aged Baltic Porter and has been aging in an Offley Tawny Port Barrel over the past year giving the original an added layer of oak, date & raisin. Available in 375ml bottles.

The Magical Legend of Bernard

This Saturday, we’ll be releasing a historical Polish beer, The Legend of Bernard Grodziskie (pronounced Grod-zis-kay). Often referred to as “Polish Champagne Beer,” Grodziskies are brewed with 100% oak-smoked wheat malt, have high levels of carbonation, a unique mineral character, and are typically less than 4% ABV.
 
Bernard of Wabrzeźno was a Benedictine monk who, legend has it, prayed that the depleted well of Grodzisk be replenished so that the town-folk would be able to continue to produce beer – their primary source of income. Bernard’s prayers resulted in magically refilling the well water and purportedly giving it healing powers; curing any ill person who drank from it. The new Grodzisk-style beer produced using Bernard’s miraculous water was said to be superior to any they'd brewed before.
 
To be clear, we don't believe in magic monks or miracle water, but we do think that this forgotten style of beer deserves another look. One drink of The Legend of Bernard Grodziskie may just heal all that ails you.

From 0 to 110 in One Afternoon

Friday afternoon we’ll be releasing our Paper Moon Brut IPA and Dereliction Double IPA in 355mL cans.
 
Paper Moon, a bone-dry IPA that’s as effervescent as sparkling wine and boasts a robust New World hop aroma, clocks in at 0 IBUs due to zero hops in the boil. We add tons of Vic Secret and Mosaic in the dry-hopping process which means big flavours of ripe stone fruit with no bitterness. 
 
At 8.2% ABV Dereliction DIPA revs up the IBUs to a turbo-charged 110, providing you with a firm bitterness and a malty body to back it up. Pouring a vibrant golden colour, it tastes like a dank pine forest, and has a hop-forward character, in both aroma and flavour. Brewed with Simcoe, Summit, Columbus, and Centennial hops, it is well-balanced, citrusy, and drinks like a classic west-coast DIPA.

Both will be on tap and in the fridge.

Greetings From Krampus

Krampus is an Eastern European folklore figure who, according to legend, punished or kidnapped children at Christmas time for their transgressions. Unlike his jovial friend Saint Nicholas, who rewarded the well-behaved with gifts, this scary, horned, half-goat/half-demon was not who you wanted to invite for dinner on Christmas Eve.
 
Krampus Dark Sour With Cherry won’t steal your children, but you might be tempted to snatch every bottle for yourself. Dark and roasty, this tart ale has a pronounced sour cherry flavour with hints of mulled wine.

What's in Store for Black Friday? Cognac Barrel-Aged Inkwell Imperial Stout, That's What

This Friday, Nov 23rd our ONLINE STORE GOES LIVEand what better way to mark the opening of the Muddy York Online Store than to offer a Black Friday release of our Inkwell Imperial Stout? This year’s iteration was aged in a cognac barrel. At 11.9%, its boozy warmth adds complex flavours of anise, oak, molasses and toasted almonds to the bold notes of tobacco, espresso, and dark chocolate. Its full-body, soft carbonation, and dry finish is the stuff of Christmas miracles. We’ve packaged 248 in a 375mL bottle and 72 in a sharable 750mL bottle.

If Black Friday web shopping isn’t your jam, on Saturday, Nov 24th, at 11am, we’ll be releasing both bottle sizes at the Muddy York Retail Shop. We’ll even have some on tap for you to try.

Thanksgetting: Cognac and Sherry Barrel-Aged 1793 Barley Wines

This Thursday, October 4th at 11am we will be releasing two iterations of our 1793 Barley Wine. One aged in a Cognac barrel and the other in a Sherry barrel.
 
Smelling of raisins, cinnamon, and cognac, and pouring a deep amber colour, Cognac Barrel-Aged 1793 Barley Wine appears soft, mellow, and slightly boozy on the tongue, with a rich body, notes of toffee, oak, and dried fruit. It finishes dry and clean with a faint bitterness and registers 11.9% ABV and 70 IBU.
 
Sherry Barrel-Aged 1793 Barley Wine brings together the classic toffee, bitter orange, and dried fruit notes of barley wine with the bone-dry, citrus, dried-grape, and fruit blossom notes of the Tio Pepe Sherry barrel it was aged in. It is 10% ABV and 70 IBU.
 
Both versions will be available in 375mL bottles, and we will also have a limited quantity of Cognac Barrel-Aged 1793 Barley Wine in sharable 750mL bottles (limit one per person). They are ready to drink right now and pair perfectly with family, friends, and Thanksgiving dinner.

Sherry Barrel-Aged 1793 Barley Wine

This Saturday, May 12th at 11 am we will be releasing the latest iteration of our Barrel-Aged 1793 Barley Wine series. Aged to perfection in a Fino Sherry barrel from Gonzales Byass in Jerez, Spain, this version brings together the toffee, bitter orange, and dried fruit notes of our barley wine with the toasted nuts, dried-grape, fruit blossom notes, and bone-dry finish of the Tio Pepe Sherry.

Tio Pepe was the named after the uncle of Manuel Maria Gonzales, who at the age of 23 opened the doors to the Gonzales Byass Winery in 1835. The young Mr. Gonzales was mentored by his uncle, nicknamed “Pepe,” in the production of sherry. They went on to develop the Fino style that is now world-renowned – and the Tio Pepe brand is the best-selling Fino on earth.  

This 10% ABV and 70 IBU beer is rich and complex and is perfect to drink right now. Packaged in 375ml bottles, these can be enjoyed in a single sitting.

Toronto’s Oldest Ghost Story Is Now Toronto’s Newest Märzen

Toronto has an old ghost story that has been handed down from generation to generation, embellished, disputed, and memorialized. Like all great ghost stories, it is shrouded in mystery and composed of half-truths. The protagonist of this tale is John Paul Radelmüller, a German-born servant to the British Royal Family who emmigrated to Canada from Britain in the early 19th Century. After trying his hand at various careers, he was eventually hired as the first keeper of The Gibraltar Point Lighthouse – the oldest existing lighthouse on the Great Lakes and one of the oldest buildings in Toronto.

He lived a relatively quiet life on Toronto Island – inhabiting a small cottage with his wife and daughter and occupying his free time with the comforts and traditions of his heritage. One such hobby was the brewing of German-style beers, which he sold to locals and soldiers patrolling the island. As the story goes, on January 2nd, 1815, Radelmüller served some beer to two soldiers who, after a few too many, became loud and aggressive. Not wanting to attract any unwanted attention, he stopped serving them. Enraged, the two soldiers chased after him, following him up the steps of the lighthouse, where they attacked him and pushed him out of the window. They found his body sprawled out on the beach below and panicked. Terrified that they’d be caught and charged with murder, the two soldiers hacked his corpse into pieces, buried his remains at separate sights along the beach, and disappeared into the night.

It is said that Radelmüller’s ghost still haunts Toronto Island and the Gibraltar Point Lighthouse.

We can’t confirm the integrity of this story (though these guys have done a pretty good job), but we love a good ghost story, and the detail about Radelmüller brewing German beers at home was too good to pass up. So, our brand new Radelmüllers Ghost Märzen is a tribute to this centuries-old tale. Its elegant amber appearance and dry finish will haunt you - imploring you to drink another.

Resistance Dry-Hopped Lager Returns

Starting today, in addition to Cervisia Saison and Haberdasher Hefeweizen, you’ll be able to buy singles, four-packs, six-packs, or two-fours of Resistance Dry-Hopped Lager and Gaslight Helles Lager in short cans. As with our initial release of Resistance Dry-Hopped Lager last year, we’ll be donating a portion of the proceeds to organizations helping to fight oppression throughout the world. This year, we’ll once again be raising money for Black Lives Matter and LGBT Youthline and adding The White Helmets and Indspire to the list.

Every day in Syria, volunteer rescue workers from the White Helmets rush to the scenes of bombings to pull people out from under the rubble and carry them to safety. Their courageous and selfless work has given hope to millions of civilians.

Indspire helps Indigenous students in Canada complete their post-secondary education by offering bursaries, scholarships, and awards to those students who need financial aid.

We’ll be announcing new beer releases in short cans over the next weeks and months, so stay tuned.

Many Beers, Many Vessels, Three Years of Muddy York

This year, on March 3rd, Muddy York Brewing is celebrating its 3rd Anniversary with a big old party. We will be releasing TWO new beers:

1) Our Barrel-Aged Plank Road Baltic Porter has been napping in a Tawny Port Barrel awaiting this day. It’s a medium-bodied, elegantly mellow 8.5% ABV, and tastes vinous and oaky with warm notes of alcohol, Port, and dark licorice. It will be available in 355mL bottles, and there’s a limit of six per person.

2) Infinite Zest is a collaboration between Muddy York Brewing and Sawdust City. Sam Corbeil drove down from Gravenhurst a couple of months back with some great ideas. The result is a Belgian White IPA with Lime Zest and Idaho 7. For you lit geeks, it’s named after David Foster Wallace’s epic 1996 novel, Infinite Jest. For you LIT beer geeks, this is a clean, bright, Belgian style IPA with big, big, notes of lime due to copious amounts of added lime zest. It is hopped with piney, tropical, citrusy, Idaho 7 and tastes like the best dream you ever had, then woke up, went back to sleep, and had that same exact dream again.

In addition to the new releases, we’ll have extra-special beers on cask, sliders and salads courtesy of Knuckle Sandwich, some magical entertainment by @christine_lynn_magic and, for the first time in our three-year history, 473mL cans of Gaslight Helles Lager.

I Am The Frogman

Imagine deep-sea diving with a 93lb (42 kg) brass helmet covering you from the base of your neck to the top of your head. That’s what the naval divers of the early-mid 20th century were outfitted with for intensive diving operations. The helmets created a hermetic seal for these divers, known as Frogmen, and enabled them to see clearly underwater and breathe normally via a constant flow of breathing gas. Frogmen were instrumental in many deep-sea raids during both World Wars, often manning human torpedoes to destroy enemy ships.

The Frogman Imperial Black IPA is big, dark, hoppy, and malty. Hopped and double dry-hopped with VQH Farms’ Cascade, Chinook, and Centennial hops, The Frogman Imperial Black IPA registers 60 IBUs and tastes rich, bright, floral, and ever so slightly roasty. It gives off a pleasantly tropical aroma and pours a dark black. So, even decked out in your finest MK V Diving Rig, you’d be hard-pressed to see below the surface.

It would be a terrible choice for a pre-deep-sea raid beverage due to its imperial strength of 8% ABV. But, assuming you aren’t reading this from your human torpedo, we think it’s a perfectly suitable beer for enjoying with friends and off-duty naval officers. It’s on tap and in the cooler here at the Muddy York Brewing Co.

Visit The Wren this Thursday night for their Hopstile Takeover – where VQH and King Lake Farms will be showcasing their fantastic Ontario-grown hops in a variety of beers – including The Frogman Imperial Black IPA.

Ward 6: Amarillo Pale Ale - What a Difference a Hop Makes

Perhaps you’re sick and tired of being told what beer tastes like. Notes of this, aromas of that, esters, colours; we get it. Tastes are subjective – one person’s “bright citrus” is another person’s “too bitter.” That’s one of the beautiful aspects of brewing and drinking a variety of beers. This is especially true of our Ward Series single hop pale ales. The recipe doesn’t change with each new brew, only the hop does. Which means you get to experience how one hop differs from the next.

Ward 6: Amarillo Pale Ale pours light and hazy in your glass like all of its Ward predecessors, but the Amarillo hops shine through with delightful citrus and melon flavours on first tasting and a moderate bitterness on the finish. It’s the kind of beer you’ll want to drink more of. But we'll let you be the judge.

Luckily for you, we’ve got it in the fridge and on-tap now. Come and get some.

2017, We Bid You Adieu – And Give You Two New Beers

We are ending 2017 feeling incredibly grateful for all of the support you’ve shown us. We hope that gratitude has been expressed in everything we do. That’s certainly the goal around here. As Christmas and New Years are rapidly approaching, we’re releasing our two final beers of the year; Sokol Pilsner and Ward 5: Columbus Pale Ale.

Sokolnice is a village nestled in the barley growing region of Moravia, Czech Republic. It is also the birthplace of our co-owner, Susan’s father. Her dad is not only a fan of the Pilsner style that the old-country is famous for, but he was also instrumental in inspiring and encouraging Jeff (Susan’s husband and co-owner/brewer at Muddy York) to start brewing his own beer a decade ago. Sokol Pilsner is a tribute to him. It is light bodied with spicy and herbal notes and provides a perfect showcase for the noble Saaz hop.

Ward 5: Columbus Pale Ale is the fifth entry in our growing Ward Series of single hop pale ales. We tweaked the recipe a bit on the recently re-released Ward 2: Centennial Pale Ale and this new beer follows that formula but substitutes Columbus for Centennial and shows what a difference a hop can make. This one is dank, dank, and dank. So, if you like Dank, this is your jam.

Both are available on tap and in the retail fridge.

Where There’s Smoke There’s Jail Fire

In the winter of 1862, a massive fire broke out during the construction of the New Don Jail. Most of the structure was destroyed by smoke and fire. Unfortunately, it didn’t halt building what was to become the most notorious jail in all of Canada.

Rauchbier is most closely associated with breweries in Bamburg, Germany who dried their malts over open flames. While the intent was not to introduce “smokiness” to the beer, they quite liked theflavours and continue to brew Rauchbier in the traditional style to this day.

Our Jail Fire Rauchbier highlights the flavour of malts that have been smoked over beechwood. Its pronounced smokiness will remind you of campfires and barbeques and will make you grateful you never had to spend a night in the Don Jail.

Hop Lovers Rejoice

Today we are celebrating the re-release of our much-beloved Dereliction Double IPA. Absent from our fridge since the beginning of 2017, you hop loving people now have cause to be very happy. Clocking in at 8.2% ABV and 110 IBU, Dereliction DIPA pours a rich golden colour, tastes like a dank pine forest, and has a hop-forward character, in both aroma and flavour. Brewed with Summit, Simcoe, Centennial and Columbus hops, it is well-balanced and drinks more like a classic west-coast IPA than the high ABV rating would suggest. That being said, the label doesn’t lie, this is a strong, delicious, beer.

It’s on tap and in the fridge now.

Barrel-Aged 1793 Barley Wine: 18-Months Old and Ready to Impress

This Saturday, December 2nd at 11am we will be releasing our Barrel-Aged 1793 Barley Wine. Aged for eighteen months in a sauternes wine barrel from Château Lafite Rothschild in France, it manages to retain the sweetness it inherited from the barrel, while still finishing clean and dry. It is vibrant and velvety soft with notes of toffee, bitter orange, and dry fruit.

In addition to the barrel-aged Barley Wine, we will also have a limited quantity of bottles from the same batch, also aged, but not in barrels. Releasing them simultaneously will give you a view as to how the aging of beers in barrels affects the finished product.

Barley Wines are a misunderstood style. Due in no small part to the inclusion of the word “wine” in its name. Brewed with water, yeast, malts, and hops, Barley Wines are most certainly beer. What gives them a more wine-like identity is the fact that they tend to hover around 10% ABV. These are not session ales. They are rich and strong by design and usually have a distinct caramel aroma.

Our Barley Wine is named 1793 as that was the year that Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe established the city of York as the temporary capital of Upper Canada. It pre-dates the creation of the city of Toronto and seems a fitting nomenclature for a truly old style of beer.

Packaged in 375ml bottles, these can be enjoyed now in a single sitting.

Imperial Black Friday

On Friday morning at 11am we will be releasing a very limited supply of our 15-month aged Inkwell Imperial Stout in 500ml bottles. Brewed last year as part of our Commonwealth Series with friend and brewer, Richard Sigesmund, this is the same batch that we’ve been pouring from our taps since September. With aromas of molasses, tobacco, and raisin, and flavours of dark espresso, and dark chocolate, its velvety soft mouth-feel and dry finish will make your glass very happy this Holiday season.

As quantities are limited, we will be enforcing a two-bottle max per person.

It’s SMaSH Time

Ontario is well known for growing over fifty varieties of fruits and vegetables. We also produce a lot of maple syrup and honey as well as livestock, poultry, fish, legumes, and dairy products. The Niagara region has become famous for its wine production. “Hey Muddy York, stop boring me with your Ontario agriculture propaganda,” you’re probably snickering to yourself. “I want to read about beer and beer only. Beer. Beer. Beer.” Ok, we get it. But hang on, because, in just a second, we’re going to tell you about some Ontario agricultural information that we promise will result in beer.

Our good friends at VQH Farms are growing some truly spectacular hops here in Ontario. We’ve used their goods in many of our beers and we’re excited to tell you that we are re-releasing our Ward 2: Centennial Pale Ale with 100% Ontario-grown hops from VQH Farms and 100% Canadian grown barley. It’s a single malt, single hop pale ale (aka SMaSH beer) that pours a beautiful hazy yellow and boasts an irresistible lemony flavour profile.

Rollin’, Rollin’, Trick or Treatin’

You’ll never guess what just rolled back into your life. You don’t need to guess because I’m about to tell you. Roller Boat IPA is cold and waiting for you in the bottle shop and on tap in the taproom. We didn’t make a big deal about it, but, humble-brag time, last spring, we won an Ontario Brewing Award for this West-Coast style IPA. At 6.5% ABV and 60 IBU, it’s the perfect dank, piney, citrusy brew to get your weekend started. It also tastes great Mondays through Thursdays, so make sure you’ve got enough.

If you need more reasons to rush over here, starting today, just in time for Halloween, you can pair a 12oz pour of our Muddy York Porter with a handmade dark chocolate peanut butter cup. Made from 100% imported Belgian chocolate, these little sweeties will indulge your adult trick-or-treat cravings, and they really bring out the chocolate notes of the Porter. The cost is $8.
